Delicate chocolate crêpes are layered with Grand Marnier pastry cream, resulting in a simple-yet-elegant cake. Don’t be intimidated – crêpes are easier than you think and well worth the effort for the resulting Chocolate Grand Marnier Crêpe Cake.
Chocolate Grand Marnier Crêpe Cake
Crêpe cake has been on my culinary bucket list for years. I can actually tell you the moment it entered the list: it was at this dinner in 2011. Yes, it has taken me 6 years to get the balls to try it.
I always thought you had to have a special pan to make crêpes, complete with the fancy spreader thing they use in at the train station in France. Good news! All you really need is a non-stick (or well-greased) pan.
To be perfectly honest, this is a really time-consuming thing to make. You have to let the batter rest at least 2 hours, then make at least 20 crepes, and then let the assembled cake rest overnight.
The good news is that time consuming does NOT equal hard! Making the crêpes is simple, and assembling the cake is even easier. Plan ahead a bit – making 20 crêpes takes some time – and you’ll be really happy with the result!
At the risk of sounding braggadocios (isn’t that a fun word?), my Chocolate Grand Marnier Crêpe Cake is not too heavy or too sweet – the perfect way to end a holiday meal! You will 100% not be disappointed if you make this simple-yet-complicated cake.
Chocolate and orange are a classic combination for good reason. The chocolate crêpes are fantastic with the bright orange zest and Grand Marnier (affectionately known as “granny” in my house).

Next on my list: macaroons. Terrifying.
Have you ever made a crêpe cake?
What’s on your culinary bucket list?
Lee says
On my culinary bucket list if for you to come over to my house and bring this cake. I’ll supply the wine. Of course, you’ll have to move back to Atlanta first!
Laura says
LOL! We’re working on it! We just need two jobs and a relo package… easy, right?
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
This sounds very tasty. I always think that when you make a crape it isn’t enough to eat. So assembly the crapes fr a cake would be perfect.
Laura says
That’s a good point too! Except in France when they add an obscene amount of Nutella and bananas. LOL!
Kate says
I love it! I make a matcha crepe cake, but it’s nowhere near as pretty.
Laura says
I was just looking at those on Pinterest! I want to try one. Is your recipe on your blog?
Patrick@looneyforfood.com says
This looks so good! I love crepes but I think I always assumed these crepe cakes would be overly sweet so Im glad to hear this is not. I do love the chocolate and orange combo. This will have to become my bucket list must make! Beautiful pictures!
Laura says
Not too sweet at all! You could always add more sugar, but I like the mildness of it.
Thanks for the pic compliment. I tried… they’re such a struggle for me!

I saw that on IG it looks amazing! Love all the layers
Laura says
Thank you so much! The layers give it such a fun texture. 🙂
Farrah says
I’ve never tried making a crepe cake but it’s been on my to do list! This looks amazing!
Laura says
Thank you! It’s totally worth the effort. 🙂
Sarah says
I NEED this in my life!
Not sure if I should attempt as is and deal with tummy upset or if I should try to make it dairy free…. hmm.
I just have a feeling my crepes won’t turn out and I’ll end up eating all the duds, oops!
Laura says
I actually think it would be easy to make dairy free – just use coconut milk for the heavy shipping cream and the lighter version for the milk. I’ve made a coconut milk whipped cream before and it was delicious. Now I want to try it here…
Jen @ Chase the Red Grape says
This looks divine my lovely and so worth putting the effort into. In fact I have made many christmas cakes in my time and I think this would be faster to make and more fun too. Who wouldn’t want a slice of this?!
Laura says
100% worth it. The crepes take some time to make, but it’s not hard. It was way less stressful that icing a cake, for sure!
Nicole @ Foodie Loves Fitness says
I’m very impressed with this cake lady! I’ve never made, nor eaten, a crepe cake… If there’s any leftover, can I come over and try it?? 🙂
Laura says
There are two slices left… come on!

DUDE – the fack?! You trying to impress the F out of me with this gorgeous layered business?! Obviously, I cannot plow it, but if I could, it would be GONE IN 60 SECONDS.
My culinary bucket list… Uhhhhhhhhhhh I actually really want to figure out how to make whole artichoke hearts that are poached in olive oil and when you bit into them… They burst with olive oil in your mouth. Cause yeah, I LOVE when things burst in my mouth. #truestory
Laura says
I impressed YOU?! I’d blush… if I blushed.
If you figure out those hearts, give me a call. I want in on the burst action.
Lindsay says
The only reason I don’t want to make one is time. But bro, you’ve inspired me. Cause… well..: grand marnier 🙌🙌🙌
Laura says
You need to try it! I bet yours would be AMAZING. Plus, Vegas needs a GF version. 😉
Susie @ Mile High Dreamers says

i was drooling when i saw the pics on IG! omg the work that must go into making the ~20 crepes! i only made pancakes once because it seems like the same amount of work! we saw this gordon ramsey braised short ribs video online that sounded really awesome. i think hubby was supposed to try making it for my birthday but i may end up helping… when we eventually get to it!
Laura says
It was fun though! Those short ribs… you must do them. Vegas made me short rib bucatini pasta once; it was absolturely amazing.
