Get up and run was my mantra this morning.
I went OUT last night. There may have been champagne and a 1am omelet involved. 🙂
Unbelievably I got up this morning to meet Mark for the Atlanta Children’s Shelter 5K. Thank you to Mark for the encouragement and pics!
I had a teensy headache. I was SO sore from a killer workout earlier in the week. However, I always feel better after a good sweat and what better way than a 5K? You can’t stop if other people are watching.
We started and I realized my soreness was working itself out and my headache must have sweat itself out. It wasn’t such a bad run!
With 2 miles to go, I was still feeling strong. Not winner strong, but I wasn’t slowing. At the 3 mile mark the finish line came into view. The finish line clock came into view and it was around 24 mins! I couldn’t believe it. I might finish in UNDER 25?! My previous PR was 25:10!
Total disbelief. New PR = 24:47
I got a plaque – 1st in my age group! The plaques were bring presented by a former Falcons football player (Mike Haynes from the Falcons) and Phaedra Parks from the Real Housewives of Atlanta (they were filming the race!).
Phaedra told me I had nice arms! Cool even if I had no clue who she was.
It’s only 1pm on Saturday and I’ve already conquered a bottle of champagne and a 5K. It’s shaping up to be a good weekend.

I’m off to do some food shopping – it’s the only way to follow up a good race.
What are you doing this weekend?
Do you like running races? Have you ever surprised yourself with a killer time?
kristy @ kristyruns says
NICE JOB!!! Way to score some hardware! 🙂 I wish I could have joined you! We need to go for a run soon!
Laura says
Thanks! We do need to run together. Maybe we can plan something at dinner next week?
Lee says
Great job Laura! I don’t know who Phaedra is either, but she’s right, you do have nice arms!
Laura says
Awwww… thanks! Sorry you didn’t make it out.
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Woohoo!! Congratulations!! That was my last 5K time, too although I didn’t place (there are people around here that ONLY run 5Ks and finish in about11 min. It’s insane). I haven’t run any recently just because most that were offered this year happened to overlap with an injury, but they are fun!
Laura says
11 mins?! I think the fastest I’ve seen in ATL is around 15.
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I was impressed and so happy for you when you tweeted about your PR. Now I am in awe of you for doing it after downing a bottle of champagne.
I like running races.. well.. I liked runing the one race I’ve done so far. I keep trying to do another.. but other things keep coming up! And.. I keep finding all these races that don’t allow headphone and I could never do that.
Laura says
Ha ha – thanks. Next time I’m going to try it without the chammy! They always advise against headphones… but my time is so much better with music.
Hayley @ Oat Couture says
Well done for your new PR! Whilst hungover as well! Very impressive! And you do have great arms! In fact they make me want to go and do some press ups right now! haha! 🙂 Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate says
Baller.
1 AM omelet’s are the secret 😉
Mark Ward says
I’m still VERY excited that you got 1st in your age group and also SMOKED your old pr! Way to go, girl!! Thanks for coming out today. Your company was greatly appreciated at the race and the green market. 😉 Maybe next time I’ll be a little more precise than “22 sumpin” and we can score a double on the firsts. 😀
Mark Ward says
Btw, the retired Falcons WR was Mike HAYNES.
Daniella@Runner at Heart says
Congrats on the race! I surprised myself by setting a PR a few weeks ago running a 5k in 23:20 and winning first place in my division.
Laura says
That’s an awesome time! Congrats!
Balancing Sylvia says
Wow! Talk about celebrating a victory right? I feel like that calls for a little bit more champagne. Awesome job lady!
Oh and you do have quite the enviable set of arms 🙂
Beth (SEB 1119) says
That is awesome!! The last time I placed in my age group was such a long time ago, but I remember feeling so excited. Congratulations!!!
I ran the Magnolia 4 Mile around Perimeter Mall on Saturday. And yes, I was at the back of the pack, but I did beat two 11-year olds in a sprint for the finish line. OUTTA MY WAY MUNCHKINS!!
Doing the Atlanta Braves 4 Miler this coming Sat. Should be a cool finish inside Turner Field.
Keep up the great work!!
Laura says
Congrats to YOU! Way to go showing those kids who is boss. 🙂
