Jalapeño Hummus Baked Falafel is a healthier version of a classic Mediterranean dish. It’s made even easier by skipping the chickpeas and simply using hummus for the batter!
I received free samples of Sabra mentioned in this post. By posting this recipe, I am entering a recipe contest sponsored by Sabra and am eligible to win prizes associated with the contest. I was not compensated for my time.
There is a Mediterranean spot in Atlanta, Cafe Agora, that I obsessed over. My office was across the street from the original location. Several co-workers and I went in so often that the owner, “Big Al,” welcomed us with hugs when we walked in.
My favorite order was the falafel platter. It came with the crave-worthy fried ground chickpea patties, greens, and hummus. In my book, there is no better combo than falafel and hummus. The chickpea-on-chickpea action isn’t overkill; rather, it’s just the right amount.
When Sabra sent over samples of their deliciously smooth hummus, I instantly thought of my old favorite platter. Of course, I can’t do anything the “normal” way, so I decided to cut a corner and put the hummus directly in the falafel.
It makes life SO much easier because you don’t need to mess with a food processor or smashing chickpeas by hand. All you need is a bowl and a spoon!
The other bonus to baked falafel that there’s no need for deep frying. It’s healthier and literally cleaner. Frying makes a mess! Baking is also great for making large batches of falafel because you can make a couple dozen on a large sheet pan at once.
Did I mention you can easily double this recipe?
For all the meatless people, falafel is a great plant-based protein source. It’s perfect stuffed in a pita or served over salad. I topped mine with olives and Greek yogurt. The possibilities are endless! All are great for packable lunches and or quick dinners.
Sabra hummus comes in more than a dozen flavors, so make this your own based on your favorite variety. I used jalapeño to make this a Jalapeño Hummus Baked Falafel because I LOVE spice. I actually added hot sauce on top of this after taking the pics. Fair warning, I can eat fire. If I served these to Vegas, she would have felt the heat from the jalapeño alone. Know your audience. 😉

Now that I’m back in ATL, I’m heading back to see Big Al!
Hummus or falafel? Or both?
What is your favorite hummus flavor?

I say Both, I will dip my falafel in hummus. I don’t think I have had a hummus flavor I didn’t like but my favorite has to be one with dill. I really like dill and garlic.
Laura says
Hummus on hummus is the perfect combo! Good call on the dill – I don’t use it enough.

This sounds amazing!! The ONE Mediterranean spot that was close to me closed almost three years ago now and I still think about it because I used to eat there at least once a week. This is pretty to close to one of my favorite dishes so I may (if I’m feeling adventurous) have to try it 🙂
Laura says
That sucks!!! Clearly a sign you need to come down to ATL. 😉

Mmmm, I LOVE falafel! It’s so good. I need to try using this hummus shortcut idea of yours! And as you know, I’m with Vegas… I’d die with the heat of hot sauce on top of jalapeño!
Laura says
Let me know if you do! I’d love to see your take. Minus jalapeños . 😉

What a great recipe! This looks delicious. I love all the fresh ingredients. And 6 grams of fiber per serving. Nice! 🙂 My brother would love the kick in this recipe. He’s got a much higher tolerance for heat than me! 😉 Hope you’re having a good early start to summer!
Laura says
Thanks! It’s a great plant-based protein recipe. Apparently, that heat is actually cooling during these dog days. Whew – I alw=most forgot this southern humidity!
