Peanut Butter Prices Increasing

September 13, 2011 By Laura

PSA: The price of peanut butter is rising.

The dry weather and ridiculous heat this summer has affected peanut production.  You can expect to see the price of peanut butter to increase as much as 30%, according to this article on Cleveland.com.

Farmers are prediction a 50% drop in yield for the year.  70% of the peanuts in my state of Georgia go into peanut butter.

The Executive Director of the Georgia Peanut Commission (who know there was such a thing?!), Don Koehler, says supplies are “plunging” and demand has reached new heights.

Why the increased demand?  Koehler credit the “Choosy Moms Choose JIF” ad campaign.  Advertising dollars at work – love it.

Can you imagine that clean up?!

Moral of the story: Stock up on peanut butter/flour/nuts NOW!  Also, don’t leave kids unattended with jars of PB.

I wonder if this means Delta will increase fares to cover the cost of the free inflight peanuts…

In honor of peanuts, I made a peanut sauce to go with my baked sweet potato tonight.  It turns out that peanut flour, coconut oil, and chili powder is an incredible combo.  I’m single-handedly supporting the peanut flour industry.

Get your peanut flour here.

Baked Sweet Potato with Coconut Chili Peanut Sauce

  • 1 sweet potato
  • 1 T peanut flour
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder
  • Shake of salt

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Lightly rub sweet potato with olive oil.  Wrap in foil and bake ~45-60 mins, or until tender and cooked through.

Mix the flour, oil, milk, chili powder, and salt together in a small bowl.   Top on your sweet potato, wait a minute for the sauce to get nice and melty, and enjoy!

***

As much as I love almonds, I think peanut products are my favorite.

Will you stock up on peanut butter for the winter?

What other food shortages/price increases are you seeing?

Ah-hah! I noticed the peanut butter I buy had gone up 50 cents a couple weeks ago. Just wasn’t sure why other than assuming just as you said. Bummer! The sauce you made looks awesome, though :]

I just bought a jar and didn’t notice the price increase, but I usually just buy the generic store brand natural kind.

Last time I went to YDFM, they had PB & CO for like $3 something which is a great deal.

I saw that! But I still went with another brand… I can’t be true to just one PB. Haha.

We were just talking about this yesterday!! Yikes…. peanut butter is definitely my favorite of all the butters and flours! You can almost add it to anything and it will taste better =)
I wonder how much they’ll increase the cost of peanut flour? Definitely stocking up!

Good thing it’s already pretty affordable! Thanks for the PSA. (The sweet potato looks yummy by the way – I’ve been eating a ton of those lately)

So, this is really random but may help some people. Target sells the super large (I want to say 32 oz) jars of Jif Natural PB for a little over $4. That’s a steal! I may really stock up…just in case 😉 I can’t go without my daily dose of PB.

Seriously? ‘Cause my son lives on peanut butter. Greeeaat. I’ll probably stock up a bit– just watch the expiration dates ’cause peanuts do go rancid after awhile. 😉 Thanks for the heads up!

Aaaah it all makes sense now. This weekend I was at Trader Joe’s and couldn’t find the organic peanut butter. I asked a worker and she told me their peanut source was getting too expensive so they had to find another source and wouldn’t have the organic PB for a while. Sooooo sad as theirs is the cheapest I can find. Organic PB is already so expensive! Thanks for the info.

OMG I feel like how people with massive mortgages probably feel reading about fluctuations in the interest rate – nooooooooooooooo!
On a more light-hearted note Ive been checking our your recipe page which is awesome – but epic!! If you had to choose your favourite dessert from there – and bear in mind my busband has to eat this as well, and he is waaaaay less of a nutrition nut! – what would it be??? xox

    • Laura says

      September 14, 2011 at 10:43 PM

      Haha – seriously!

Thanks so much! My favorite dessert that has no redeeming qualities is that Kentucky Derby Pie. The one with a few health points (dark chocolate and almonds) are the Chocolate Sea Salt Cookies. And of the “healthy” I love Mexican Black Bean Brownies. Don’t tell him the secret ingredient and see if he even notices. 🙂

How interesting! You know, I grew up in Durant Oklahoma. Home to the world’s largest peanut. Big peanut country out there 🙂 I’ma have to ring up some of my peanut peeps to get the full skinny.

Love your peanut sauce! I bet it rocks that chili so good! Buzzed

Yikes, everything is getting or has gotten more expensive. I normally did the shopping when Katherine was at work on Saturdays. When her schedule changed and she went with me she really noticed the jump. It had been gradual for me, but since she’d been away from the store a few months…Anyway, thanks for the heads up.
