Some people might not agree with me on this one.
A couple of them are in my family.
Uni is delicious. Uni refers to the edible part of a sea urchin. I’d had it before in sushi dishes, but this week while my family was here I split a whole one with my mom at Ironside.
It’s spikes were still moving a little…
We were debating what uni actually was. I thought it was just roe. A quick google search told us otherwise. Uni is actually a sea urchin’s gonads.
That was almost too strange to be good. But I’d already eaten it and liked it. Vegas was disgusted.
The more golden the uni, the better it is. It’s creamy and silky, which is odd at first. If it’s your first time trying it I recommend having it as sushi to offset the texture.
It’s a high demand delicacy throughout the world (read: it’s expensive). It really is worth the price tag. It’s so good! A bit briny, but more on the sweet side. It’s surprisingly light!
Another interesting fact about uni: it’s an aphrodisiac.

No recipe this week… we were busy. I figured this would be strange enough. 😉
Have you ever tried uni? Would you?
What are you doing for the 4th? Check out Monday’s recipe ideas!
Jennifer F says
Never tried it, but I would!
Debbie @ Coach Debbie Runs says
I’m with Vegas. I’ll agree with strange 🙂
Juli@1000lovelythings says
I don’t know why but I have never warmed to eating fish/ seafood… basically anything that comes from the sea.
I am disgusted and intrigued at the same time! I don’t know if I was brave enough to try it. I guess it depends on if I had a drink before. After one glass I am much braver to taste stuff that I would never consider to try sober.
Laura says
It took me untilI was about 26 to eat any seafood… but now I can’t get enough!
cat says
Oh what! I need to try uni stat! Definitely passes the strange test… And I trust your taste that it’s good too! Now to google some of my local sushi restos menus…
Laura says
Let me know when you do!!! It’s amazing stuff.
Angela @ happy fit mama says
Ummmm….not sure I can get on board eating Sea Urchin gonads!
Jen @ Chase the Red Grape says
I would definitely try this! If I ever have the option to I totally will – love tasting new and different things!
Sadly no 4th July celebrations for us in the UK, just a regular weekend. But got friends coming over for a goodbye party – we are off to Australia in a month to live! 🙂
Allie says
I think this is the first time I have to side with Vegas! Yikes!! And your sister looks like your twin – holy identical. I almost thought you grew your hair out overnight 🙂
Laura says
HA! We were just talking about how we don’t see the resemblance but everyone says that!
Heather@hungryforbalance says
I am not sure about eating gonads of any kind, sea urchin or otherwise.
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
I’ve always been curious to know if I would like Uni. I don’t care for overly rich things, but uni isn’t necessarily greasy/oil, just unctuous. I really must try it some time!
Laura says
You’d love it! It’s not terribly rich, but a bit briny.
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious says
How in the world do you eat that? I’m intrigued! I love fish but not sure if I could this.
Laura says
With a spoon! 😉
Linz @ Itz Linz says
never tried it before!
Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner says
My daughter and husband love this and all kinds of sushi but not me! Have a great weekend
Tara @ Sweat like a Pig says
I will try anything once. I remember I used to fear eating eel, and now it’s one of my favourite foods ever! So ever since then, I’ve kept an open mind when it comes to food… or just about anything haha
Laura says
I did the same thing with eel! It’s delicious.
rachel @ athletic avocado says
i don’t know if I would have the guts to try sea urchin anything!
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets says
I’m with Vegas on this one. I’m not messing with anything’s gonads, unless it’s the Hubby.
Laura says
Whatever. You guys are wusses.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine says
I’ve heard and seen it, but never tried it!
Lisa @ RunWiki says
I have tried Uni, but I must say… I wasn’t a fan. I am very texture sensitive and let’s just say that I prefer crunchy..haha! Hope you and Vegas have a lovely 4th. xo
Laura says
I hear you… I can’t eat mashed potatoes due to the texture. Or flan. Blech!
lindsay says
gonads are high in iron… right? LOL! love uni. Love YOU!
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
I don’t know if I could do uni now that I know what it is. Ignorance is bliss! Hope you had a great 4th.
Lucie@FitSwissChick says
And one more time, I agree with your wife.
Nicole @ Foodie Loves Fitness says
I’m 100% with Vegas on this!!!! My hubby is sitting next to me on the couch and looked over at my computer because I just let out an, “EWW!” while reading this. He was like, “What is that? It looks like an old peanut butter & jelly sandwich.” bahahaha.
Laura says
LMAO! Come on… it really is good! 😉
Alex @ Alex Tries it Out says
So weird. I would DEFINITELY try it. I’ll try anything once … why not?
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
I always shy away from that t the sushi places.
GiGi Eats says
I was just at sushi and my friend said: I hate uni. It tastes like whale jizz.
Makes me wonder when she’s had whale jizz before… And why I wasn’t invited to that PARTY…..
Laura says
I’ll eat nearly anything once, but I draw the line at whale jizz.
Heather @ FITaspire says
I thought it was the uni’s guts – interesting to see it’s not quite that. 🙂 We saw a lot of these in the ocean last week! I like it best topped with a raw quail egg.
Laura says
Yeah… sometimes it’s best not to Google stuff at the dinner table.
Kaz @ Melting Moments says
Very interesting! 🙂
janet @ the taste space says
I love uni! I didn’t think I liked it until I had it at the Tsukiji market in Japan where it was obviously very fresh. It was so smooth, it was like butter. I was never able to recreate that once I returned to North America… and then I became vegan. 😛 Your piece is huge though! I did not know it was the sea urchin’s gonads. Interesting.
Laura says
Ok, this surprises me! But awesome. I’d love to try it in Japan.
Lynn @ Oh-SoYummy says
oh man, i am still an uni virgin (at least, as far as i can remember!). i do want to try it but sorta wish i didn’t know what you just revealed about it! then again, i’ve had pig’s feet in a vietnamese dish and it’s delicious. even had blood sausage once and it was actually kind of decent… we’re hopefully going to ironside this weekend so i’ll ask the family if they wanna try it… =D
Laura says
Oh man… if you can eat pig’s feet you can totally eat uni! I tried the blood sausage once too. Wasn’t my favorite… but I think that was mostly mental. 🙂
Enjoy Ironside! Our favorites were the lobster roll and the oysters.
