Strip Mall Chinese + WIAW

December 28, 2011 By Laura

Short weeks throw me off.

It’s already Wednesday?  That means it’s already What I Ate Wednesday.  Jenn, you are a genius/exceptional round-up hostess… and I hope you feel better soon!

It was a random day of eats.  I can’t seem to get enough vegetables in my body post-Christmas.  Raw, crunchy green and orange veggies seem like treats right now.

That’s why I went to a burger joint and ordered a veggie sandwich.  Don’t judge.

Breakfast:

This morning was a rush to get out the door to the airport, but I managed to squeeze in a workout knowing this trip won’t allow time for one.  45 mins on the “glutes” setting of mom’s elliptical and a quick BodyRock – The One That Got Away.

Sweating in the morning almost always translates to a smoothie-breakfast for me.  It also means I’m starving and almost chugging the whole thing before I get a pic.

Served with a side of coffee, of course.

Green Apple Pie Smoothie

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 C spinach
  • 1/2 large banana
  • 1/2 apple
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 1/2 tsp apple pie spice
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom

A green smoothie has never tasted so good after all of the post-Christmas indulgence.

Lunch:

Our flight took off right at lunchtime, so technically my “snack” lunch and my lunch at 4p (yes, my stomach was eating my spine at the point).  Either way, I ate at 5 Guys Burgers.  And in the rush to shovel food in my mouth, I failed to take a pic.

I assure you that the veggie sandwich (with hot sauce) and Cajun fries were worth the wait.

Dinner:

Being adventurous eaters, Mom and I searched for the top restaurants in the small suburb of Annapolis we’re staying in.  A place called Golden Pavillion earned 5/5 stars on Google and Yelp… sold.

Chinese food from random strip malls always has the potential for greatness or food poisoning.

Miso Soup + Sake

Veggie Singapore Noodles for me – extra spicy

Garlic Eggplant and Rice for Mom

Snacks:

Since I was on a place, I had my customary pretzels and Coke Zero.

***

Thank god I got some snazzy boots for Christmas – it’s pouring down rain up north!

Have you ever gone in a burger place and ordered veggies?

What has been your most-used Christmas present so far?

Awesome eats! But I must say, I’m from Singapore and I’ve NEVER heard of Singapore noodles! What goes into them, exactly?

      December 29, 2011 at 4:41 PM

I’m not totally sure… they were rice noodles in a brown sauce with extra red peppers and veggies. Whatever it was was, it was delicious!

    Cute boots.

Isn’t the veggie sandwich at 5 Guys just condiments on a bun? Like Subway? I’ve never been there but there’s one right near my house.

      December 29, 2011 at 4:42 PM

Pretty much, except they have sauteed mushrooms and onions available. Not worth a special trip, but good to know it’s available in a pinch.

I always order the veggie option at fast food joints! I had a cucumber/avocado sandwich at Togos the other day and it was delicious!!
    Cute boots!!
I would say my most used Christmas presents are my new purse and Express jeans =)

Ooo where are you up North?! I bet you are cold 🙁 it has been snowing in PA today!

I agree, strip mall Chinese restaurants are a hit or miss for sure.

Wow – thank god it didn’t snow! I would have probably cried… or escaped to go skiing. 😉

I’ve definitely gone to a burger place and ordered veggies before (I’m a sucker for a good veggie burger and french fries!) – I have yet to go to 5 Guys though…I need to try it out sometime.

I think my most-used Christmas presents so far have been all my kitchen wares!

There was yet another cake at work today, and my brain and body wanted to throw it out of the window. I should take full advantage of this feeling for a few days and get some veggies in my belly. and maybe one of your smoothies.

      December 29, 2011 at 4:46 PM

Was it a worthy cake? There was a particularly amazing cookie that had to be demolished by me today. 🙂

5 Guys was the last place I had a real burger – didn’t know they made a veggie sandwich!

Yup! But no veggie burger, which struck me as odd.

I always order veggies (or something like it + gluten-free at restaurants)! I think I’m the most high-maintenance restaurant eater ever!

I am a fiend for french fries, I could do without every junk food in the whole world if I could just eat fries. Man, I wish I could pick those off the page and eat them right now!
My favorite Christmas present this year? Def my DSLR, I can’t stop taking pics!

A funny story and peek into the deranged, perverted mind of my male counterpart… Alex works at an alcohol treatment center where he has to keep his ridiculous hilarity to himself… one of the clients was talking about 5 Guys once and asked him, “Have you ever had 5 Guys?” He wanted to answer “not at once” but was forced to bite his tongue. 😉

LOL! Tea spewed on keyboard. Thanks for that. 😉

  18. Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says

    December 28, 2011 at 8:32 PM

I, of course, have ordered veggies at a burger place…but I was more immediately reminded of the time I ordered a roasted vegetable sandwich and asked if they could add bacon to it. The waitress looked at me like a lunatic and said, “That’s the vegetarian sandwich.” I said, “Yes, I know. I would like to be a bacon-eating vegetarian.”

Also, I love your boots, and the description of your stomach eating your spine. I hate that you felt that way, but now I have a highly accurate description for that feeling that I will use when the time is right. [Credit to you, of course.]

    • Laura says

      December 29, 2011 at 4:56 PM

You can use my stomach-spine eating term if I can use your “bacon-eating vegetarian” label. 😉

most used christmas present by far is my dslr and tripod! i’m in love with it. a close second is my cookie scoop – i’ve used it twice already in 3 days! you’d think i’d be sick of cookies this soon after christmas…

    • Laura says

      December 29, 2011 at 4:57 PM

Haha! You HAD to try out the DSLR and the cookie scoop. Totally viable excuse for more cookie-eating. 🙂
