How do you get a cold in the summer?
It makes zero sense.
Above is my sick meal of the day: chicken noodle soup and a turkey BLT from Panera. That’s basically all I ate today, aside from half a Quest bar and a cucumber. A sure sign I don’t feel good!
I was doing SO well with the meal prep, but this weekend with Vegas was crazy in the best way possible. No meal prep for me. Ending it all with a cold (obviously) didn’t help. Instead of laying around feeling sick and lonely, I thought I’d recap the awesome stuff we did while Vegas was here.
Awesome thing number one: we got a new car! It’s not here yet – they’re shipping it from another dealer – but that didn’t stop us from celebrating with a kick-ass dinner at Kimball House. Vegas had never been before, but all I had to say to get her excited was “they’re known for craft cocktails and oysters.” 😉

Here’s where we sound like nut jobs. We intended to get a new car; however, we went in looking for a small car. The preference for small may have been mine, but Vegas was on board. We left with a small SUV. The reason? They can’t put a hitch on a small car.
Why a hitch? Because we also bought this.
The jet ski, not the U-Haul. 😉
This picture cracks me up. Could we be more of a stereotype? HAHAHA! The story gets better. Vegas picked me up in front of my office (pictured) because she needed help getting the thing to our garage. We had to pick the ski trailer up off the truck and wheel it down our (very narrow) street. While the landscaping guys watched. We really need our own reality show.
I’m jumping ahead in our weekend though. We started on Thursday with Hamilton. I got great tickets for us by selecting the obstructed view option. They were much more affordable… which needs to see the right side of the stage anyway?
We did dinner beforehand at a place I’m sure to frequent now that I’ve tried it once – Bar Margot. I’m not usually one to eat at a restaurant in a hotel, but this is an exception. Owned by my favorite local restaurateur, it’s nothing like any other hotel dining in Atlanta.
Food is good. Drinks are great. The lighting is also perfect for selfies. You can’t lose.
The last highlight was my friend Ben’s birthday. He wanted to go to The Colonnade, whose clientele is endearingly referred to as “grays and gays.” The food is old school Southern, and the drinks are strong. You do the math.
Despite this being an Atlanta institution since 1927, I’d never been. Ask me why and I couldn’t tell you. I knew I’d love the place when I walked in and saw an older gentleman sitting a the bar drinking a martini. It was 1 pm.
My granny may have made their fried chicken, but the highlight – for me – was the tomato aspic. Aspic is straight out of a 1950s Southern Living. It’s not something I’d necessarily order on my own, but it warmed my #strangebutgood heart.
Yes, that’s a side of mayo its served with.
Happy #WIAW! I totally broke the rules, but I also barely ate. Don’t be me.
Be sure to link up to Jenn’s WIAW baby!

Vegas is hopefully coming back for GOOD verrrry soon. Thank you to everyone who’s been asking after her.
Have you ever had tomato aspic? It tastes like Bloody Mary jell-o.
Did you see Hamilton? It’s 100% worth it!

What an amazing time you are having! I have never seen hamlet, or any show for that matter, but I really want to and you are to hilarious with the jet ski! That tomato aspic looks interesting, not sure about the mayo with it but I would try it.
Patrick@looneyforfood.com says
I meant Hamilton, not hamlet. LOL
Laura says
HA! My boss kept saying Hamlet too. 😉

You guys are hilarious!!! I absolutely love the jet ski and that picture is everything :-)))
Love all your resturant descriptions, especially the vision of the 1pm martini. Gotta love that.
Speaking of love – HAMILTON! Just wow. Can’t wait to go myself but November seems like a long wait..
Feel better my friend!! I’m just FINALLY getting rid of my cold and I feel like a new woman!
Laura says
I’m pretty sure it wasn’t his first martini either! He was sitting at the bar with a to-go box and the martini was barely started. Dude is my spirit animal. LOL!
You’re going to LOVE Hamilton!!!!!

Sounds like a fun weekend! Hope you start feeling better soon 🙂
Cora says
Woooo Jet Ski!!! Bahaha that is AWESOME. You girls are wild.
That tomato aspic thing probably wouldn’t be my first choice…. but I’d LOVE to see Hamilton. Obstructed view tickets are totally the way to go.
Laura says
We ARE wild… but we’re fun! 😉

It’s definitely different… worth a try for the cool-factor alone!

Yikes! Summer colds are the worst. I hope you feel better soon, since I am sure it’s not easy eating hot soup in this heat! 😫
Laura says
Thanks! I just cranked the A/C. LOL!
Kate says
I’m glad you spent the weekend with Vegas and not doing much else. You have to soak those moments up!
Jen @ Chase the Red Grape says
Yaaaas Vegas will be with you soon! Then you can take jaunts in your new fancy car and jet Ski! Haha!
I hope you feel better soon. Isn’t it crazy when you get the flu when it’s hot? It’s freezing here and I basically spent all of last week in the rain… I was sure that by now I would have to cold. Going strong though so fingers crossed I have missed the bullet! Only 3 more months of winter… Urgh…
Laura says
Welllll… it may be delayed again. But at least we’re taking a baller vacation in 10 days.
You’re welcome to some of this heat!! 😉
Nicole @ Laughing My Abs Off says
Oooh Hamilton, nice!! Wishing you a speedy recovery; being sick in the summer is the worst 🙁 But at least you had an awesome weekend with Vegas!
Laura says
Thanks! The weekend fun was totally worth the cold. Ha!

Summer colds are the worst. I’ve been dealing with some horrible allergies and have had alright headache for the past few days.. which is the worst. How do you get a summer cold? That a good question. I miss Vegas so much but I saw her on instagram with a cool jetski. This is the best way to be picked up from work. Happy Birthday Ben 🙂 You and Vegas looks GREAT!!!!
Laura says
Thank you so much!!! More Vegas to come… we head for a vacation in your ‘hood soon! Sonoma and then Tahoe. Close-ish, yeah?
Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets says
Hooray Vegas weekends and I do meant the person, not the place.
Now that the jetski has arrived, when should I come back? Tomorrow works for me….
Laura says
The person is even more rad than the place, I must admit. 😉
The jet ski is in the garage and waiting! Still haven’t even used it yet…
Nicole @ Foodie Loves Fitness says
A cold in the summertime blows, so I hope you feel better soon!
Congrats on the vehicle purchases! Jet skis are so fun! Hope you get some good use out of it. How far do you live from the water?
Laura says
We’re pretty close to several lakes… closest one is less than an hour! Obviously, I have yet to go…
Deborah @Confessions of mother says
The jet ski! How fun! Hope you are feeling better this week
